Use the following checklist to gather supplies and be prepared in the case of power outages:

Food & Water

  • Water — 1 gallon per day per person, enough to last several days to a week
  • Food — Non-perishable canned food, baby food, pet food, special dietary food items, enough to last several days to a week
  • Manual can opener
  • Paper plates and utensils
  • Small grill or stove

Preparation & Supplies

  • Create an evacuation plan — pre-arrange a dedicated meeting place in case you get lost or separated, plan for care of disabled or elderly persons, plan for care of pets
  • Map out routes to shelters
  • Keep every car filled with gas
  • Medications — prescription and non-prescription medications that will last up to a week
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Matches
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Important family documents
  • Address book with important contact information
  • Cash
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Toilet paper and paper towels
  • Garbage bags
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Extra clothing and sturdy shoes
  • Phone and charger
  • Mosquito repellant
  • Games, books, and cards

During the Storm

  • Turn off and unplug electrical devices and appliances
  • Keep fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible
  • Keep food in a dry spot
  • Use generators safely
  • Only travel if necessary
  • Leave 1 light on to know when power is restored
